JUDY REES THOMAS

Judy displayed her natural talent for artistic achievement early by winning a major newspaper art award at the impressionable age of 12.  There followed numerous other successes working in all mediums, however by now her preferences were for watercolour, and pen & ink.

Formally trained at the Brisbane Central Technical College as a commercial artist and illustrator, Judy was employed professionally in both fields for many years before turning to the creative freedom of freelance work.

Further formal tuition in Fine Art followed with watercolour Masters such as David Fowler, David Paulson, Joseph Zbukvic, Cees Sliedrecht and Graham W. Smith.  Of particular interest were the diverse fields of landscapes, still life and figures.

Concentrating on watercolours, Judy is intrigued and fascinated by the challenge of this most exciting medium.  The transparency of watercolours draws light from the white paper and here in lies the charm.

A long-term member of the Watercolour Society of Queensland, Judy has exhibited through galleries and other venues including art shows, such as the prestigious Brookfield Art Competition.

To date Judy’s achievements include: 3rd Prize ‘Still Life’ & 3rd Prize ‘Portraiture’, Pine Rivers Show 2012; 3rd Prize Samford Show 2012, A ‘Special Mention’, Watercolour Society 2011 [published in Australian Artist April 2012 edition] ;  1st Prize Watercolour Society ‘Still Life’ 2008;  1st, 2nd & 3rd Samford Show 2008,  2nd & 3rd Prize Samford Show 2007;  3rd Prize Pine Rivers Show 2007;  3rd Prize Anglican Parish 2007;  3rd Prize Novice Class Brookfield Show 2005 plus numerous ‘Highly Commended’.
